✨ Making the Most of Sweet Reads + Skills Packs in Your Classroom

If you’ve downloaded your free mini pack (Missing Monarch) or purchased a full Sweet Reads + Skills unit, you might be wondering:
“How do I actually use this during my busy week?”
Great question! These packs were created to be flexible and practical—no fluff, just meaningful literacy work.

Let’s break down a few easy ways to integrate them into your classroom routine:

🔁 1. Whole Group Reading Routine

Use the story as a shared reading experience!
Day 1:

  • Project or read the story aloud.
  • Pause to model thinking aloud or ask prediction questions.
  • Let students chime in with observations or connections.

Day 2:

  • Reread the story together.
  • Complete comprehension questions as a class or in partners.

Bonus: Use the vocabulary words in a class discussion or anchor chart.

👩‍🏫 2. Small Group Reading / Intervention

For groups working on fluency or comprehension, the packs make a great mini guided reading lesson:

  • Preview tricky vocabulary before reading.
  • Read the story together (or echo read).
  • Work through 2–3 comprehension questions aloud.
  • End with the grammar activity as a language warm-up or review.

You can even break the story into parts over several days!

🎯 3. Literacy Centers or Independent Work

If you run centers during your reading block, print the pack and let students:

  • Read the story independently or with a partner
  • Complete the vocab or grammar page
  • Choose one comprehension question to answer in writing

Pro tip: Laminate a few copies for reuse, or upload the pack into your digital platform for paperless work.

✍️ 4. Fast Finishers or Sub Plans

  • Sweet Reads are perfect for those “What do I do now?” moments.
  • Keep a few printed packs in your emergency sub tub—everything’s done for them.
  • No guesswork, no wasted time.

💡 Teacher Tip:

If you’re short on time, just use the story and one other skill page. You don’t have to do it all. These packs are designed to support you, not overwhelm you.

I have a bachelor of science degree from Texas A&M University in elementary education specializing in reading. I enjoyed teaching second grade before I had children. Then I had the blessing of home-schooling all four of my kids. During that time, I also taught several classes for other home-schoolers. I am now an empty nester, but I’m not ready to retire. I created many of my own literature units over the years, and I would like to share my knowledge and expertise on this blog to help home-schooling parents and fellow teachers.
